Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a holistic therapy which aims to encourage the body to regain its own unique natural balance. It is a gentle therapy which works in conjunction with the body to restore its own equilibrium.

Reflexology is based on the theory that the body is mapped out in the feet. Gentle pressure applied to these points encourages improved circulation (both the blood and the lymphatic system), it helps us to relax and also helps to calm and soothe the nervous system.

It has been shown to be especially useful for the following conditions:

  • Pregnancy
  • Post-natal recovery
  • Migraine
  • Back Pain
  • Digestive Complaints
  • Fluid Retention
  • Hormonal Problems
  • Stress

Treatments usually last an hour, the practitioner will ask several questions regarding lifestyle and medical issues at the initial consultation. The Reflexologist will then use their thumbs and fingers to apply pressure to the feet which is adapted to each individuals needs. Areas of tension or congestion may be detected in the feet which mirror an area of tension in the corresponding part of the body.

Mild post-treatment reactions are quite common after reflexology. It is important to remember that these are just the effects of the body beginning to cleanse itself. They are all part of the healing process and will disappear in 24 - 48 hours.

Symptoms can include mild headaches, tiredness or a feeling of heightened sense of emotion. It is important to tell the Reflexologist how you feel after a treatment as this information will help them formulate a treatment specific to your needs.
